Thomas Bewick (1753–1828) was an English wood engraver, naturalist and artist.  He reinvented the art of wood engraving and brought new life and interest to the art of the illustrated book.  His mastery of the technique produced miniature works that explored the life of his native Northumberland. The work astonished those who regarded wood engraving as rough and crude in a time when engravers had turned to copper which was able to retain greater detail. Bewick, who was revered by Audobon, undertook to reproduce all the birds of Britain in his book A History of British Birds.
